Despite the crisis, US biotechnology and pharmaceuticals have received record investments
In 2008, US pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies spent a record amount on research – $ 65.2 billion, up to $ 2 billion from 2007. This data was provided by the marketing firm Burrill & Company.
Of that, about $ 50.3 billion came from pharmaceuticals, about $ 14.9 billion from biotech companies.
A study by the Wharton Business School found that in 2006, US companies operating in this market spent $ 65,000 on each of their employees for research and implementation of research. This is approximately 8 times higher than the level of a similar investment in all other sectors of the US economy.
In total, according to estimates from the Association of Developers and Manufacturers of US Pharmaceutical Products, more than 2.9 thousand new medicines are in the process of testing. Of these, about 750 are for cancer control, more than 300 are for cardiovascular disease, 150 for diabetes, about 110 for HIV / AIDS.
